Otters is a mixed ability class of Key stage 2 pupils. We currently have seven children, 2 girls and 5 boys. Our teacher is Kate W, and we have three special support assistants; Rachel J, Lisa F. and Caroline T. Lisa W helps us at lunch time where we join the rest of the primary classes to eat in the hall.
We follow the National Curriculum, adapted to meet our individual needs, and work on our literacy and numeracy skills daily. A lot of our teaching is through topic work, but we also have time to work on our individual targets. This year the topics are ‘Seasonal Celebrations’ in the Autumn Term, ‘Homes’ in the Spring Term and ‘Plants’ in the Summer Term. We work in groups and independently in our class as well as sometimes individually one to one with staff.
In Otters we work on independence, self-help and communication skills across the week. A visual timetable helps us to understand what we are doing each day and we use speech, Makaton signing & Widgit symbols, PECS and switches to help us communicate. We are a busy and active class and enjoy weekly PE, swimming, play barn and soft play sessions, in addition to using the playground and outdoor equipment. We regularly visit the sensory room and the dark room. We also work on our independence through computing and cooking sessions, in addition to trips out in the community.
